I’ve recently lost three nails due to flaking, peeling and general crap-ness. I don’t know what’s causing it, I have had a massive change of diet, but it’s for the better so I’d be surprised if it was that. I am left wondering if it’s either Seche Vite or just frequently using nail varnish remover. I am using a formula containing moisturisers but I’m no expert so have no idea really whats causing it.  I’ve been using my Nail Envy religiously but it’s just not cutting it this time. Time to face facts. My nails need help. So as of last Wednesday I have embarked on a  new regime to restore them to their former glory.

This time I’m bringing out the big guns. Some highly recommended Mavala products, as well as continuing on with the Nail Envy as a base coat.  The products I will be using over the next few weeks are Nailactan a cream to be massaged into the nail every night, Mava-flex a serum to be painted on and rubbed in twice a week and the cult item Maval Scientifique Nail Hardener which comes highly recommended by pretty much everyone. You use this twice a week too.

I have high hopes for this lot so am looking forward to seeing the results over the next few weeks and I will of course be updating here with my views on the products.

Has anyone else tried any of these products? What did you think? Any tips for me or anything you think I ought to know?

I honestly think it’s the prolonged use of nail polish and remover that does it. Also, a lower fat diet will effect your nails (and hair). Mine are a complete mess, a course of vitamins for hair and nails might help if you’re dieting.

I have tried all sorts, including some of the Mavala products. I like the Nailactan but I found the Scientific Hardener made the skin around my nail harden as well. It’s my fault for sloppy application but it’s worth mentioning as a warning! I would think it causes some keratinisation of the skin.

I think the main thing is to replace the oils, so the Nailactan and Serum should help. I look forward to hearing how you get on!

Thanks for that Jane. I will have to look at some of the supplements available. Top tip.

The hardener has warnings all over it about keeping it off your skin so I’m already aware but its worth knowing that it’s true and not just warnings for nothing1

    Thank you as always x

I am very interested to know the results too. My nails are also in bits and flaking like crazy.
I have been trying to be good and eat more veggies and fruit, I have seen results on my skin but my nails are still splitting and flaking and I guess something like these products would help.

When my nails were peeling and breaking due to constant nail polish wear, the only thing that worked for me was to go on a nail polish ban for a few weeks. Was difficult but it worked.

I haven’t tried any of these products though so will be interesting to see your results.

My nails are exactly the same! And I’ve been using Seche Vite top coat for a while now plus changing nail colour frequently because my nails are so bendy, nail polish chips off them within 2 days. 🙁 So I don’t know what’s causing it either, but I have also decided to take action and bought some healthy nails and hair tablets from Sainsbury’s and also a Nails Inc treatment pack. Planning on doing a post on my blog about it and will keep an eye on your progress too. Good luck!

I was also going to recommend some vitamin supplements – I got 3 month’s worth of capsules from Beauty Bible to trial recently, and I am amazed at how gorgeous and long my nails are now – I wasn’t expecting that, as the packaging only mentions maintaining healthy hair! Although when I had my nails done last week, the beautician said nails are made from the same material as hair?

Anyway, I’m taking Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Omegas – I recommend! Although TBH, the main ingredient is fish oil, so I’m sure there’s a much cheaper own-label version in Boots!
