YSL Glossy Stain

By now you’ve probably all heard of these beauties but for the uninitiated here’s the run down. The Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Vernis A Levres (to give them their full name) or Glossy Stains as I shall be calling them are a sort of hybrid product. A Gloss, a lipstick and a stain in one. It really is a kind of genius when you think about it.

These are beautifully packaged as you would expect from YSL and have a wonderful applicator. It’s a spongy sort, but it’s shaped angled to give you a perfect precise application.

The two shades I was sent are (left) No3 – Brown and (right) No13 Reddish Pink. Before I show them on, here are swatches.

As soon as I’d taken the photo I wiped the swatches off with a wet wipe.  The stains left were there for a long time after. Hours!

Sooo, lets have a closer look at the shades I was sent. Firstly Number 3. This shade is chameleon like. In the swatch and in the tube it looks to be a dark mauve shade. On my lips, depending on the light, it’s either a browny shade or an orange-shade.

It’s odd. That’s not to say I don’t like it, I do, I really do, it makes my eyes look insanely blue. The only problem with this is I found it a bit patchy and struggled to get an even application.

And then there’s shade number 13, Reddish Pink. I applied this a bit shoddily… oops.

It’s more vibrant in real life and the application of this shade was much more even. It’s not for the faint hearted but it is beautiful.

Gorgeous.

Oh and for reference, here’s Reddish Pink, after 8 hours with no touch ups.

So the verdict? Love the colours, love the way they look on, I even think the price isn’t too bad at £22 each. Although one of mine was a bit patchy, I still like it and actually wore it for my night out a couple of weeks ago and it lasted really well through out the night. The only think I do think is worth mentioning is that I found these to be quite drying on my lips, this was easily resolved with the tiniest touch of balm before. Not too much or they won’t “grip” and stain well enough, but just the smallest amount to product your lips. Other than that, love these!

I like the second shade a lot but I’m not so keen on the first one. I find quite a few glosses apply unevenly

I absolutely love these, just got myself the second one in shade 5 and I have every reason to suspect this is not the last one.

I have to admit that I am a big fan of these too! I dont find them drying but I do find that The different shades do behave slightly differently.

I love how the first one looks on you, the pink is fab too, but the brown/mauve really does make your beautiful eyes take centre stage! Not sure I’d like the formula of these, the stain element would put me off I think.

I literally gasped when viewing your photos. They are so beautiful! Sometimes stains can cause a bit of feathering. Did you do anything to prevent that?

    • Charlie says:

You totally need at least one of these in your life! I didn’t get any feathering, I suppose because it’s thicker than your traditional stain? I do get feathering from those with a Benetint formula.

    Adore the first one. Gorgeous.

    Very me 🙂
